The behavior is the symptom. Not the problem. Here's what's actually going on, and how to fix it.
Dear friend,
Your horse isn't misbehaving.
He's trying to make sense of something that doesn't add up.
Getting mixed signals.
And being asked for things he hasn't been prepared for.
Or he's learned to get by without really understanding what you're asking.
That may not be what most people want to hear.
But stick with me, because this is the thing that changes everything.
Your horse isn't spooking to embarrass you.
He isn't buddy sour to spite you.
He isn't barn sour because he hates trail riding.
He isn't pushing on the bit, ignoring your leg, loping on the wrong lead, dropping his shoulder or doing that one thing that makes you nervous because he woke up that morning and decided today was the day.
He's doing all of it because his self-preservation instinct is running the show, and that instinct takes over every single time a horse isn't sure what to do and doesn't have enough confidence in the person on the other end of the rope or the reins.
Here's the deal...
A horse craves peace. He craves sureness.
When he has a human who communicates clearly, leads confidently, and works at the right level, that horse will give himself over completely.
Not because you forced him to.
Because he wants to.
But when he doesn't have that...
...he goes looking for peace somewhere else.
That's the barn. That's his buddy. That's the gate.
That's every problem you've ever had with a horse, traced back to one root cause.
The behavior is the symptom. Not the problem.
Here's the good news:
You can get better.
You can become the kind of person your horse can draw comfort, sureness, and security from.
You can learn to communicate clearly, work at the right level, and see things you've been missing for years.
Your horse can't fix himself. But you can fix you.
And when you do, the horse follows.
Not tricks. Not gadgets. Not the trend of the week.
Just a real understanding of how horses think, and how to become the kind of person they actually want to follow.
I'm Carson James.
I grew up all over the place, but most of my life has been spent horseback.
Not in clinics. Not in arenas.
On working ranches, where a horse that didn't do his job wasn't just inconvenient, it was a real problem.
You either figure out what actually works, or you have some long, hard days.
My foundation comes from the Vaquero tradition.
The Buckaroo way of doing things.
Feel, timing, communication.
No gadgets. No shortcuts.
No five-step methods that only work on Tuesday.
I've spent decades studying what Tom Dorrance and Ray Hunt left behind, and trying to do it justice by carrying it forward while continuing to learn from good horsemen still out there doing it every day (many you've probably never heard of, because they're on a remote ranch somewhere in Nevada).
I've always been fixated on figuring out what's actually going on in a horse's brain.
Not just what he's doing, but why.
And that remains my core focus whether I'm on a colt, a performance horse, a dressage prospect, following cattle in a pasture, teaching a clinic, or riding a finished bridle horse.
To this day, I'll still be out riding late when something clicks and I need to go see if it holds up.
Because knowing something and being able to apply it are two different things.
I've never hit a point where I thought I had this "good enough."
Horsemanship is limitless. I hope I never think otherwise.
I've always wanted to take what I've learned from years of real-world experience and make it something people can actually grab onto and use.
But more than that, I wanted to help their horses.
The challenge was taking what works in the saddle and making it simple, clear and accessible to people everywhere.
Because I am not.
Most of my time is spent on a horse.
If it involves technology, I'm probably calling Jared.
Ask me to build a website, and I'll get back to you after I finish trying to upload a picture to Facebook.
Jared is the other half of this thing.
He's been the behind-the-scenes reason any of this actually works for years.
While I was out riding, he was building the platform that would eventually hold everything I know and make it accessible to someone sitting on their couch in Ohio at 11pm trying to figure out why their horse keeps spooking at the same spot in the arena.
He filmed my videos.
He took those and turned them into courses.
He built an app.
He built a video library with a search bar that finds exactly what you need in about two seconds.
He built a badge reward system that tracks your progress.
And...
And he built the home where Carson AI lives (more on that in a sec).
The point is this...
What you're about to see isn't just a generic template built on a WordPress site (whatever that means).
It's the result of two brothers who spent years perfecting their craft and understand that there's always room to learn.
One with horses, and one with building things that continue making him a revolutionary pioneer of horse tech.
You are about to get us both.
What started as a handful of horses and a lot of figuring things out the hard way has turned into a community that's grown far beyond what we ever expected.
But none of that is the point.
The point is this has been tested on real horses, with real people, in real situations.
Everything you're about to see was built on the back of that.
Carson AI is built from my complete teaching. It lives inside the Buckaroo Crew app.
Once you're in, open Carson AI from your phone and tell it what's going on with your horse. It gives you back the real answer I'd give you if I were standing right there with you.
The more you talk to it, the more it knows your horse. It remembers everything from every conversation.
Whenever you've got a question about your horse, Carson AI's got an answer.
This isn't a collection of random videos thrown together. Every course was built with a specific purpose: to take you from wherever you are right now to somewhere you didn't think you'd get.
How a horse's nervous system directly affects movement, balance, and soundness — understanding both the brain and the body leads to better training decisions and longer-lasting horses.
Footage from my clinics — watch the process of building a solid foundation and working through the kinds of problems riders run into every day.
All of the important pieces taught at the walk. Get these in place, and your horse will start to think, stay with you, and handle situations on his own.
A straight-to-the-point crash course on the fundamentals every rider needs. This format shows you exactly how to apply your aids so each maneuver is clear and effective.
Everything starts here. Timing, communication, and clarity — from the ground up. If you've never done groundwork or it hasn't been working, this is where we straighten it out.
This is the foundation. What you need to ride your horse the right way and stay out of trouble. Not flashy. Just effective.
Spins, sliding stops, transitions, counter arcs, neck reining, rollbacks, and more. When the foundation is in place, this is where you build from it.
There are hundreds of methods out there — but none of them work until your communication makes sense to the horse. This is where that starts.
This is the same plan I start every horse with for the first 30 days. It's been tried on thousands and holds up. Stick to it and see what starts to come together.
Pressure gauge technology added to the videos so you can see exactly how much pressure to use, when to add more, and when to release. Timing is everything.
The most common horse problems — and exactly how to solve them. And when you need more, just open the video library and search. It's all there.
A clear breakdown of the traditional hackamore — the pieces, the fit, the mecate reins, and the approach that builds a light, responsive horse.
The most common issues you'll run into on the trail — and exactly how to work through them, so the trail becomes something you enjoy, not something you manage.
Raw, uncut footage of the essentials that go into preparing a colt for his first ride. No production — just the real thing. And that's what makes it useful for any horse, at any stage.
So many options, so much confusion. I'll walk you through exactly what I use, why I use it, how it works, and how it should fit.
Over 400 Videos. One Search Bar.
Can't remember how I handled that thing with the horse that does the thing?
Just search for it.
Every video I've ever made — organized, searchable, accessible in seconds.
You'll find yourself in there at 10pm looking up something specific that happened in your ride that day, and you'll have your answer in about 2 seconds.
It's like having my brain in your pocket.
Which, come to think of it, is also something we built.
But we'll get to that.
Every Buckaroo Crew member gets instant access to my complete resource library.
I call them bonuses because that's what they feel like.
Stuff you'd normally pay separately for, just sitting there waiting for you the moment you join.
A quick-reference guide to the most common horse problems. Keep it somewhere handy. You'll use it more than you think.
Everything you need to know about using a hackamore, all in one place.
The written companion to the course. My first 30 days with any horse, laid out in a format you can follow along with.
What you should always be working on when you ride. Simple. Clear. Actionable.
Does your horse actually respect you? Take the test and find out. You might be surprised by what you learn.
How to communicate clearly and effectively with your horse. Get this right, and everything else starts to come together.
How confident is your horse? Does he actually trust you? Find out here — honestly.
Make sure your horse is mentally equipped before you climb on. Go through these exercises and know for certain where you stand.
My complete book. Real horses, real people, real problems — and exactly how I worked through them. A lot of people tell me this one alone was worth the price of membership.
Is your horse mentally sound? I mean really mentally sound — not just "he usually behaves okay." This checklist will tell you.
Work with your horse's nervous system instead of against it. Become someone your horse can draw comfort and security from. One of the most underrated resources in this whole library.

A few years ago I recorded something that I'm still really proud of.
Most horse training content asks you to watch a video, try to remember what you saw, and then go apply it with your horse.
By the time you get to the barn you may have forgotten some of it.
HorseTracks works completely differently.
You put your phone in your pocket, hit play, and ride.
I'm in your ear telling you exactly what to do with your horse in real time.
Step by step. While you're on him.
You're not trying to remember anything because I'm right there with you telling you what to do next.
It's the closest thing to having me in the arena with you without me actually being there.
The original HorseTracks came with a physical audio player and a printed binder.
People who went through it called it one of the most useful things they'd ever done with their horse.
Pro members get the complete digital version of the entire system.
Every track. Every lesson. Every PDF.
On your phone, in the app, ready to ride.
Beyond the Basics is a weekly email written for serious riders who want a deeper understanding of how horses think, learn, and respond.
The kind of insight that doesn't normally make it into the general content because it's too specific or too nuanced for the casual rider.
If you have been around horses long enough to know that the basics are not actually basic, this is written for you.
Horse.TV is like Netflix for horse people.
Movies, documentaries, TV shows, training content — all horse, all the time.
Buck Brannaman, Ken McNabb, Craig Cameron...

Most programs teach you techniques. I teach you to think like a horseman. Techniques break down when something unexpected happens. A way of thinking doesn't. That's the difference.
If you own a horse and want things to go better, you're at the right level. The courses start at the absolute beginning and build from there. There's no prerequisite except showing up.
Cancel anytime. No guilt. No judgement. I'd rather have members who want to be here than subscribers who feel trapped (kind of like your horse).
You open Carson AI inside the Buckaroo Crew app and ask anything about your horse. It answers the way I would — built from every clinic, podcast, video, and email I've ever made. It remembers your conversations, so the more you use it, the better it knows your specific horse.
Neither does anyone else. The videos are short, focused, and designed to be watched and then immediately applied. You don't need to go through the whole library. You need the next right thing — and the search bar will find it in about 2 seconds.
Thank you very much. And I must say that I've watched a blue million horse training videos, or so it seems. Carson is the best at explaining not only what but the why, which keeps the viewer's eye to the screen for what's next. I take your advice, execute and get results. I love the quote "if you want a better horse, make your horse better." Now I have the confidence to do just that. Thank you. Dave G.
I worked at a Ray Hunt clinic in Thermopolis, Wyoming, in 1986. I got a lot of one-on-one time with Ray working behind the arena those 2 days. I truly believe Ray would be extremely proud of what Carson is doing. No one explains the how-to and why about the steps in training a horse as well as Carson James!!! Period! Stephanie S.
I love this group. I've watched so many videos and your ability to really break it down step by step is so helpful! I was ready to give up as I lost confidence in my ability to be a better person for my horse. Thank you!!! Linda M.
That's what this looks like when the pieces start coming together.
It's not magic, and it's not about finding the right trick.
It's about putting your horse in a position where he can actually learn and stay with you.
If that's the direction you want to go, here's how we can help you get there.
He's not holding a grudge.
He's not waiting for an apology.
He's just out there in that pasture being exactly what he is.
And every time you go out to work with him, he's going to tell you the truth about where you are.
That's what horses do.
The horse is your mirror.
When you start getting better — really better, not just picking up new exercises and techniques but actually understanding how a horse thinks...
...he's going to feel it before you even realize you've changed.
You don't announce the improvement.
The horse announces it for you.
There's no limit to how good this stuff can get.
Except in our own minds.
P.S. Try it for 30 days. If it's not right for you, I'll give you every dollar back. No explaining yourself. Just email or call customer support and it's done.
I've spent my whole career asking people to trust the process before they can see the results. Thirty days is enough time to get into the courses, work through some things with your horse, and know whether this is for you.
If it isn't, that's okay. Not everything is for everyone.
But if you put in the work, I think your horse is going to tell you something different by the end of those thirty days.
P.P.S. Our mom, Julie, runs customer support and she works more than she probably should. Don't be surprised if she answers the phone at 11:00 at night. If you get her, please tell her to take a vacation. She won't listen to us.
